From San Francisco - Highway 1
One of California's most beautiful seaside drives is Highway 1 along the Sonoma and Mendocino coastlines. This is a longer drive up than Highway 101 to Mendocino County, but it's well worth the time. Head north on the Golden Gate Bridge and cut over to Highway 1 from Highway 101 at several locations. You could take the Highway 1 West/Muir Woods exit in Marin County. Or take the "River Road" west off of 101 just north of Santa Rosa to drive along the lower reaches of the Russian River. When you reach the Sonoma Coast, turn north to reach both the South Mendocino Coast and North Mendocino Coast.

From Sacramento

Take Highway 5 north to Williams, then Highway 20 west to Highway 101 north in the Russian River Valleys region.

- To continue to the North Mendocino Coast, take Highway 101 to Willits, then take Highway 20 west again.

- To continue to Ukiah or Hopland in the Russian River Valleys, take Highway 101 South.

- To continue to the Anderson Valley or the South Mendocino Coast, turn south onto Highway 101 and take Highway 253 West at Ukiah's south end. You will intercept Highway 128 in Anderson Valley. You can then turn west and go to the end of 128 at the ocean and turn south onto Highway 1 to proceed to the South Mendocino Coast.

- To continue to North Mendocino County, take Highway 101 North to Willits.

From Napa Valley
