Smith Vineyards is located on the Talmage Bench between 800 and 900 feet elevation on hillsides and terraces well above the Ukiah Valley floor. The two clones we picked (470 and 383) are specifically matched to our soil type.

| Farming Practices | We follow sustainable vineyard practices and a written Farming Plan is prepared prior to each growing season tailored to the desires of the winemakers purchasing grapes from Smith Vineyards. This plan covers all vineyard operations from pruning to harvest with the overall objective of achieving a healthy, uniform vineyard of balanced vines so as to deliver the highest quality fruit possible to the winery. A copy of our 2011 farming plan is available upon request. |

| Vineyard Mgmt | The vines are cordon trained on Vertical Shoot Positioning trellis. They are drip irrigated on a Regulated Deficit Irrigation program monitored by soil moisture probes. Leaf pressure is regularly checked using a portable pressure bomb. Permanent cover crops are maintained in vine middles. We chose 110R rootstock to be drought tolerant in this sunny, well drained location. |
